NN and KGLI AIR CONCERN ON THE GROUNDING OF SUPERFERRY FLEET (Sep 17, 2009)
Sulficio O. Tagud, Jr., Chairman and CEO of Negros Navigation, expressed concern today on the continued grounding of the Aboitiz Transport System fleet (ATS). "While Negros Navigation supports a complete investigation into the sinking of ATS’s Superferry 9, we are concerned that the decision of the MARINA will have unintended consequences on the country’s travelers and on industries, such as the agriculture industry, that depend on shipping companies for the movement of their goods," said Mr. Tagud.
Mark E. Williams, Investment Director of KGL Investment Company, KSCC, the Kuwait company which manages the equity fund that invested in Negros Navigation in 2008, echoed the concerns of Mr. Tagud. "While we are appreciative of the vigilance of MARINA, we are concerned that the actions taken in completely grounding the ATS fleet will have a chilling effect on the willingness of foreign investors to continue to invest in the transportation sector in the Philippines."
